A truly special trio unveiled by Clayton Classics
A truly special trio unveiled by Clayton Classics
Some of you may remember from some time back our visit to Clayton Classics, the Coventry classic specialist whose work saw us leaving amazed by its quality.
But has the company upped the ante all the more, and set itself an even higher mountain to climb next time? And why are we saying that? Well, this trio of restored (and now for sale E-types) is the reason why.
Three E-types, in all three Series. One fixed-head, two Roadsters. You’re spoilt for choice but if you have a devotion to one particular E-type Series (and we love any Series 2), it’s there.
Hailing from 1962, 1969 and 1974 Clayton Classics, whose name goes hand-in-hand with E-type restoration, has incorporated some subtle upgrades, but which don’t detract from the car’s original personality.

The 1962 fixed-head has had a nut-and-bolt restoration taking more than 1600 hours, with a bare-metal re-paint, brake and suspension upgrades (as well a five-speed gearbox) and award-winning interior among the car’s features. It’s the 252nd right-hand drive fixed-head built and was once owned by Ramsay MacDonald’s grandson.

The 1969 Series 2 Roadster had an extensive overhaul three years ago, the engine being re-built, a five-speed gearbox being fitted and brakes and suspension being upgraded.

And on to the Series 3 Roadster – extensively mechanically overhauled in 2021 suspension and brakes have been upgraded and a six-speed automatic gearbox fitted. Like the 1969 car it has an LED exterior and interior lighting set-up.
There’s no escaping just how excellent these cars are and superlatives don’t do them justice. But if we were buying, we’d ask Clayton to build us a USA-specification Series 2 2+2 automatic in brown with brown interior, riding on chrome steels. And yes, with red band tyres…..
