An XR3i not to be missed
An XR3i not to be missed

What’s the biggest influence on the UK’s classic car market? And, in fact, any classic car market?
The biggest driver is demographics as it’s the age of potential buyers that dictates what’s in, what’s out, what’s emerging, what’s starting a fall from grace.

Yet one of the UK market’s most fascinating phenomena is that of the fast Ford. In fact, to call it a phenomenon understates its status. So, let’s call it the cult of the fast Ford instead. Really emerging five or six years ago and driven by an interest increase for Sierra RS Cosworths and RS-/XR-badged Escorts and Fiestas, it’s shown no signs of slowing down.

Which is good for the vendor and good for the auctioneer, but if you want to get on the fast Ford bandwagon prices can be prohibitive.
Or are they? Well, here’s a car that might give you some faith, but be under no illusion you’ll have to get stuck in a bit before it goes back on the road.

Step forward this one-owner, 10,600 miles from new 1987 XR3i. Parked at two years old when the vendor bought another car it never even made it for its first MoT test. The vendor believes the inner sills are salvageable but the front floor (both sides), front crossmember, slam panel (possibly), the rear panel and rear quarters will need work.

It’s in Manor Park Classics Online’s 5-12 February sale. Estimated at £5000-8000, the starting bid is £2000.
